8 Ways to Keep Warm Without Touching the Thermostat

Sometimes, you want to stay warm without racking up that heat bill. We completely understand. That’s why we’ve prepared a list of 8 ways to stay warm this winter that don’t include your thermostat. Let’s get started:

stay warm during winter
Drinking a warm beverage is a great way to stay warm at home during the winter!

  1. Add draft stoppers: Keep the freezing winter air from entering your home with a draft stopper. You’ll notice a huge difference after you add draft stoppers to all your outside-facing doors. When drafts enter your home, the furnace must work harder, which can increase your heat bill.
  2. Use space heaters: Use space heaters in high traffic areas to ensure they are warm and toasty! However, make sure to follow a few rules when using space heaters: Turn them off before you leave home. Don’t let blankets or anything flammable cover them, ever. Don’t run them continuously; give the space heater a break every couple of hours.
  3. Drink a hot beverage: Whether you prefer hot tea, coffee, hot chocolate, or cappuccinos, fill your cup with a hot beverage, and you’re sure to start feeling warm. Sip slowly while enjoying your favorite book and soak up the warmth.
  4. Close your blinds and curtains: When you leave blinds and curtains open, you allow the coldness to permeate your home. We suggest closing them to ensure that no heat escapes your home.
  5. Cook or bake: When you are up and about chopping vegetables, boiling water, kneading bread dough, you tend to feel warmer. The heat from the oven helps keep you toasty.
  6. Do chores: Vacuuming, dusting, sweeping, and mopping are great chores to get your blood pumping and warm you up! Also, once you’re done, the house will be clean. Who doesn’t love a clean home?
  7. Wear layers: This may seem obvious, but sometimes we forget to add a sweater or socks while at home. Instead of turning up the thermostat, put an extra layer on or wrap yourself up in a blanket to stay warm.
  8. Exercise: Get up and move! It’s the best way to stay warm, and you burn calories (so you can enjoy that bread you baked earlier). Some exercises to get you warm include jumping jacks, skaters, mountain climbers, burpees, plank jacks, or high knees. You can also simply take a jog around your living room.
