Are Boilers Really Energy Hogs?

Modern-day boilers are reliable and energy efficient, contrary to popular belief.

When most people think about boilers, they think about ancient, large heating tanks in outdated homes. They imagine that the monstrous size of the boilers is what contributes to more emissions and that they are harmful to our planet. However, you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, however oversized that cover may be.

On average, modern boilers are around 3% more efficient than alternative furnace heating systems because they use less fuel. A common myth is that boilers are open systems. However, this is not true. Boilers heat up your water within a closed tank, which means that less energy is escaping into the air, and it instead moves directly into pipes within the flooring and walls of your home. In contrast, furnaces do heat up your home by way of air, so some of this heat is more apt to escape, and the furnace has to work harder to reach the same amount of heat that a boiler would, so more energy is used.

However, the advice for a boiler is the same for many outdated components. If your boiler is more than 20 years old, it's probably time to upgrade. Older boilers are much less energy efficient, and modern technology has evolved so that you can get the most out of newer products. Older boilers are at a much higher risk of causing moisture damage and water leakage. In order to receive the highest energy efficiency of the boiler heating system, an upgrade will be the best option for you.
